Lana Del Ray, ‘Born to Die’.

I like this one.

Good lyrics, apart from the dying bit.

Had an excellent phone conversation with my Pop this morning. Best advice ever… People are always going to have disagreements and differing expectations, but if something really, really bothers you, make sure you sort it out and make some behavioural changes ASAP. It’s bad enough feeling blue, but its even worse when those feelings start turning into resentment.

Thanks Pop!!

“Old Mary, full of grease.
Your heart stops within you.
Scary are the fruits of your tomb,
and harsh are the terms of your sentence.
Old Mary, sister of mine.
Mother to the world.
Carry this burden now.
Until the moment of your last breath.”

-The Deadweather, Old Mary

I love spooky music like this. Especially when I am feeling despicable.

Still love the aggressiveness and immediacy of The Strokes’ Take It Or Leave It.
Who doesn’t love that point beyond frustration where its almost like you just don’t care either way anymore- you just don’t wanna be left hanging on the telephone.

Twin Shadow, ‘Castles In The Snow’.

“Here’s all I know.
Your chequered room and,
your velvet bow.
Your Elvis song in my ear.
That moonlight voice that I hear.

You’re my favourite daydream,
I’m your famous nightmare.
Everything I see looks like gold.
Everything I touch, turns cold.
Castles in the snow”.

An unusually early start to go down to the sports pub before work was rewarded with scrambys, hash brown and bacon while watching Bayern München take out Real Madrid 2-1.

Might back it up with a bit of Messi tomorrow.

I think (?) I am excited about this.

I don’t like Nicole Kidman at the best of times (Why Kidman when you can have Blanchett I’ve always thought)- but judging from the trailer she doesn’t look too bad in this.

Clive Owen is going to have a lot to live up to following whoever played Hemingway in Midnight In Paris AKA Swoon City- but obviously its not all about molding Hemingway into some sort of crazy hottie (Ideally they would use time travel to bring ‘On The Waterfront era’ Marlon Brando in for this part. Just sayin’).

So yes- a film about the Spanish Civil War- lets hope they throw in a bullfighting scene as some sort of nod to Death In The Afternoon.

DVF x Current/Elliot

Directed by Gia Coppola.

God damn, is it possible for that family to be any cooler??

Last night we went to Monterey for delicious Cajun Chicken burgers.
They have lots of board games there, and I got absolutely annihilated at Connect Four.
My brain just doesn’t function with that one. I don’t have the ability to anticipate and pre-foil (I love the word ‘foil’ in terms of dissolving schemes- its very Scooby Doo) the other players next move, which leaves me wildly open for the kill shot when it comes to chess, checkers, backgammon, connect four….. Etc.
The burgers were off the chain though.

The two of us have both installed that app ‘Draw Something’ which works sort of like pictionary.
It’s gonna be a sweet way to stay in touch during the day while we are both at work. Though last night while sitting in bed, we couldn’t resist testing it out with a few rounds.
My best one has to have been a shoddy stick figure of a man in blue squiggly clothes holding a red square above his head. Which homeboy correctly guessed straight away as a referee- thanks to the football chant often heard at Wellington Phoenix matches “the referee is shit and he’s wearing blue, and he’s wearing blue, and he’s wearing blue” (sung to the tune of The Exponents’ I’ll Say Goodbye).
It’s all in the details.

Cœur de Pirate’s Wicked Games. A cover of the The Weekend song.

I really love The Weekend’s album ‘House of Balloons’. Just Super stripped back and lo-fi electronic dance music layered up with the kind of shitty Rn’B lyrics that wouldn’t feel out of place in an Usher or a T.I. joint.

It’s so unexpected and clever. I said to my sister, “Kanye has definitely listened to this, bowed his head, and said quietly to himself sshhheeeit, that is good”.

So I beefed up the traditional spread to salami Milano, black forest ham, camembert, buffalo mozzarella, sliced eggs and tomato. There were fresh baked rolls there incase the Osterkranz didn’t work out (didn’t have to worry about that though did I!). Unfortunately couldn’t find fresh horseradish at all the usual haunts in Wellington, not even at my beloved Moore Wilson’s fresh deli!! So we had to settle for horseradish in a jar. Still nice though. So filling was our late arvo snack that I could only manage a handful of S&V chippies and done garlic bread at a large scale BBQ at a friends house that night!

My first experiment with baking bread (aside from the odd pizza base) for an Austrian Easter treat called Osterkranz. It’s a plaited wreath of “sweet” bread as it has raisins and sugar. Traditionally served on the Sunday with boiled eggs, cold cuts and grated horseradish. But this bread would be off the chay-chay heated with a slice of melted butter and a hot cuppa. Anyway, look how good it turned out. It’s garnished with dyed boiled eggs- the red egg symbolises fertility and we joked about how that dye is going way back in the cupboard and not being used for a looooonnnng time thank you!!

So I spoke too soon…. The ears have been ritualistically chewed off of my Lindt bunny already. Not only did I get a bunny, but also a collection of caramel eggs cleverly hidden around my room. Thanks homeboy!!!
